Modernizing Legacy Java Systems with Generative AI: A Modular Framework
Abstract:
Enterprise Java systems power many critical business operations, yet most were not designed to support the probabilistic, asynchronous, and compute-intensive demands of modern AI. As organizations adopt Generative AI, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), and agentic automation, legacy architectures can become a significant barrier to intelligent enterprise transformation.
This session presents a governance-aware modular transformation framework for integrating Generative AI into legacy Java systems without operational disruption. Rather than pursuing wholesale replacement, the framework introduces abstraction and orchestration layers between legacy platforms and modern AI infrastructure, exposing stable business capabilities as modular services connected through secure and auditable integration pathways.
Key components include RAG pipelines grounded in enterprise knowledge repositories, GraphRAG architectures combining vector retrieval with relationship-aware graph traversal, multi-agent orchestration systems coordinating planner, retriever, validator, and executor agents, and governance-aware AI gateways enforcing prompt sanitization, access control, and policy compliance.
The session will also cover a phased modernization roadmap, use-case prioritization criteria, observability strategies, and a risk-reduction model that balances automation with human-in-the-loop validation. Attendees will gain practical insights into extending the value of established Java investments while enabling intelligent search, contextual summarization, and AI-assisted decision-support capabilities.
