From ICT to Intelligent Sustainability: Engineering a Greener Computing Future
Abstract:
As computing systems evolve from traditional ICT infrastructure to intelligent, connected environments, their environmental impact continues to grow. From ATMs and ticketing machines to AI-powered edge devices and smart kiosks, these always-on systems consume significant energy and generate material waste that often goes untracked in sustainability plans.
This talk introduces an Environmental Intelligence Framework—a systems-based approach that extends environmental management into the realm of sustainable computing. Developed in alignment with ISO 14001 principles, the framework integrates modular hardware design, intelligent software optimization, predictive maintenance, and data-driven operational feedback. It enables organizations to measure, analyze, and improve their environmental performance through indicators such as energy efficiency, component lifespan, and carbon-aware operations.
The session highlights how engineering and management teams can apply intelligent monitoring and automation to create accountable, resource-efficient systems. It offers a practical roadmap for transforming ICT operations into adaptive, environmentally intelligent computing ecosystems that balance reliability, performance, and sustainability.
