Error Budgets, SLOs, and SLIs in Complex and Emerging Computing Domains Redefining Reliability Through Sustainable and Intelligent Engineering Frameworks

Abstract:

As computing ecosystems evolve across multi-cloud, edge, and AI-driven infrastructures, reliability engineering faces unprecedented complexity. Traditional Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) metrics—centered on uptime, latency, and availability—are no longer sufficient to represent reliability in intelligent or sustainability-focused systems.  This session introduces a next-generation framework for applying Error Budgets, Service Level Objectives (SLOs), and Service Level Indicators (SLIs) in complex and emerging computing domains, including AI inference systems, IoT telemetry networks, and hybrid financial clouds. The talk explores how reliability indicators can be extended beyond conventional boundaries to include sustainability (energy efficiency, carbon cost), AI performance (model drift, inference accuracy), and economic efficiency (FinOps-aware SLOs).  Attendees will learn how to design multi-dimensional SLIs, define adaptive error budgets that self-tune based on workload and sustainability context, and integrate observability intelligence through ML-based anomaly detection. Real-world case studies from large-scale financial and retail systems demonstrate how dynamic SLO models reduced downtime by 15%, optimized energy usage by 10%, and improved decision confidence for reliability teams.  By blending principles of SRE, AI-Ops, and sustainable computing, this session provides a pragmatic approach for organizations striving to balance innovation velocity, operational reliability, and environmental responsibility. Participants will gain actionable insights and architectural blueprints for building reliability frameworks that are both intelligent and sustainable—preparing them for the next era of autonomous, self-governing systems.
