Beyond Carbon Neutral: Designing AI Systems That Actively Regenerate Our Planet

Abstract:

The conversation around sustainable computing has primarily focused on reducing harm: optimizing energy efficiency, minimizing carbon footprints, and achieving carbon neutrality. While these efforts are crucial, they represent only the first phase of our environmental responsibility. This talk challenges the field to move beyond harm reduction toward a paradigm of active ecological restoration through intelligent systems.
We stand at an inflection point where artificial intelligence can transition from being part of the environmental problem to becoming the primary driver of planetary regeneration. This session explores designing AI systems that actively contribute to ecosystem restoration, biodiversity enhancement, and climate repair through three transformative approaches: Regenerative AI Architectures using bio-inspired, energy-positive computing models; Ecosystem Intelligence Networks deploying AI agents for environmental intervention from coral restoration to reforestation; and Circular Intelligence Systems optimizing for regenerative outcomes across value chains.

Drawing from case studies in precision conservation, autonomous ecosystem management, and AI-driven carbon sequestration, this session demonstrates how intelligent systems become active participants in planetary healing. We'll explore technical architectures, ethical frameworks, and cooperation models for AI systems that measure success by positive environmental impact, not just computational performance.

The future isn't about doing less harm; it's designing intelligence that actively heals our planet, positioning regenerative AI as the foundation for environmental restoration.
