Abstract:

Artificial Intelligence is no longer a futuristic concept in healthcare—it is a computational reality embedded in surgical robotics and patient monitoring systems. These systems rely on real-time AI models that process multimodal data streams—video, force feedback, vitals—under strict latency constraints. To ensure safety and reliability, these AI components are deployed on embedded platforms governed by real-time operating systems (RTOS), which guarantee deterministic execution, task prioritization, and fault isolation. But intelligence alone is not enough. Compliance with IEC 62304 is essential: it mandates rigorous software lifecycle processes, risk management, and traceability for all medical device software. Together, RTOS and IEC 62304 form the backbone of certifiable, safe, and high-performance AI in the operating room—where every millisecond and every line of code can impact a life.

Mr. Shiva Kumar Madishetty, an Advanced Embedded Software Engineer at Steris Surgical Solutions, USA. Shiva holds a Master’s degree in Electrical & Computer Engineering from the University of Akron and a Bachelor’s degree in Electronics & Communication Engineering from Kakatiya University, India. Over the past decade, he has worked extensively in the field of embedded systems, surgical equipment software, and real-time computing platforms.

He is also a named inventor on a pending U.S. patent for distributed and redundant control architecture for surgical tables and has authored multiple publications in IEEE journals and conferences, with over 140 citations in advanced VLSI and signal processing research.

At Steris, Shiva has been leading work in RTOS-based embedded architectures for surgical devices, with a focus on safety, compliance with IEC 62304 standards, and mentoring teams that develop next-generation surgical technology.
