Integrating NLP and Machine Learning for Enhanced ESG Scoring in Finance

Abstract:

Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors are now at the heart of investment decisions. But making sense of all the ESG data out there is a huge challenge. In this keynote, I’ll share what ESG is, how it is related to Risk Analytics, and how natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning are helping financial institutions cut through the noise and build ESG scores that matter. Drawing on my experience building data pipelines and analytics tools, I’ll show how we can use NLP to pull insights from news articles, company reports, and regulatory filings, and then combine that with structured data for a more complete ESG picture. We’ll talk about the practical side, what works, what doesn’t, and how these methods are already shaping investment strategies and risk management. I'm a Senior Data Engineer with over 10 years of experience in Data Engineering and Machine Learning, currently working at Bank of America in Charlotte, NC. I hold a Master's in Information Technology from the University of Cincinnati and specialize in financial risk analytics, climate risk forecasting, and AI/ML applications in the financial sector. I've authored over 20 White papers focusing on Machine Learning applications in financial risk management and climate analytics. I actively contribute to the academic community through editorial board memberships with several journals and have conducted peer reviews for publications. My technical expertise spans big data technologies like Spark and Hadoop, real-time data processing, and advanced analytics.
